2010 Peninsula Pulse Literary and Photography Issue

Let’s face it – getting published is tough.

First, you put endless hours into creating a short story, writing a poem, or capturing the perfect photograph and editing it until it is just right (or so you think). Then you send your work off to a magazine, newspaper, or journal, seeking validation for all your hard work. You receive your first rejection letter – “Sorry, your work is not what we are looking for at this time.”

And so the process starts over, you make a few adjustments, address another envelope (or another email) and send it out again and again until finally someone sees the greatness in your piece of work. When that happens, something changes. You go from being an aspiring writer, poet, or photographer to being able to say with certainty – I am a Poet, I am a Writer, or I am a Photographer.

For some artists featured in this issue, they have long been able to claim their title. For others, they are entering into a whole new world as writers, poets, and photographers. Welcome!

I sincerely hope readers enjoy what they find within this issue – it is a product of hard work, talent, and creativity on the part of the artists. And I thank each one of them for sharing their talent with us.

I also need to give a big thank you to our esteemed judges, who were gracious with their time and direction: Marilyn Taylor, Alex Kuo, Dan Eggert, Dan Anderson, and Kelly Avenson. I am greatly indebted to our pre-screening committee for trudging through endless submissions in order to make our judges lives a little easier; Marge Grutzmacher, Allison Vroman, Steve Grutzmacher, Nik Garvoille and Sally Slattery tackled this feat.

Everyone at the Pulse helps to make this issue happen every year, and your unwavering support of literature in the newspaper world is commendable.

Readers, please enjoy this year’s Literary Edition of the Pulse – I thoroughly enjoyed putting it together for you.
