2014 FALL ELECTION RESULTS

A Win for the Kids

Southern Door School District Superintendent Patricia Vickman on voter passage of the referendum authorizing the district to exceed the state revenue limit in the 2015-16 school year by $390,000:

“We really listened to the community. We did do some strategies – increased student fees, reductions in benefits, looked at some efficiencies. Our message was very simple this time going out. It wasn’t for successive years; it was for one year. We had our facts and figures in place for the 2015-16 budget. The presentations that we did were very simple, about the situation we were in due to rural school funding and what the deficit was, and how we ranked with the Wisconsin Taxpayer Alliance as one of the lowest-spending districts in the Packerland Conference. We also had a very dedicated and larger group of community supporters that were out there sharing the message as well. The overall mood was that there was a lot more positivity in the community this time.

“We still are going to continue to deal with the rural funding issue. We have local school superintendents and some local citizens interested in talking with our new legislator about how that might look differently and could help out the Door County and Kewaunee county schools.

“We’re thankful. Our kids are really the winners today. We’re thankful for the support the community gave and their belief in us, and we’re going to continue to do our very best to be a great school system.”
