2017 Door County Plein Air Festival Awards Announced

From a field of 37 nationally recognized outdoor painters, Andy Evansen from Minnesota was awarded Best in Show at the Door County Plein Air Festival for his watercolor painting “The Charter.” The winners of the 2017 invitational event were announced at the Festival’s Gala Auction July 30 at Peninsula School of Art. Editor-in-chief of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine and judge, Peter Trippi, determined the award winners.

Other top awards include: First Place – “Sunset on Q” by Jane Hunt (Colo.); Second – “Summer at Gills Rock” by Mitch Baird (Ariz.); Third – “Dead End Road” by Tom Nachreiner (Wis.); Honorable Mentions – “Door County Dry Dock” by Shelby Keefe (Wis.) and “First Light” by Olena Babak (Maine). D.K. Palecek, from Kaukauna, received an invitation to participate in the 2018 Door County Plein Air Festival with her Featured Artists’ Choice Award in the Dockside Paint Out for her oil painting “Distant Shore.” All of the winning paintings were in oil except for the watercolor “The Charter.”

The award-winning works, as well as a selection curated by the Festival Featured Artists, will be on display in the Guenzel Gallery of Peninsula School of Art until Aug. 12.
