2017 Earth Week Events in Door County

From April 19 – 30, The Nature Conservancy, The Ridges Sanctuary, Climate Change Coalition of Door County, Gibraltar and Sevastopol Schools, and more are working to mitigate climate change throughout Door County.

They’ll be planting trees, hosting lectures, playing music and educating in celebration of Earth Day. In addition to work with students and regular appearances on WBDK, WDOR and The Lodge WLGE, throughout the week, they’ll be getting hands on in a variety of activities. Here are the events you can join in on.

April 21

5-8 pm. Science on Tap

A family friendly evening of science snippets, live music, camaraderie and brews. Featuring speakers Roger Kuhns and John Bacon.

Tarl Knight, Small Forest, and Terry Murphy celebrate Earth Day in song. Reservations recommended. $20/ticket.

April 22

7-8:30 pm. Wild Words
Crossroads at Big Creek
2041 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay

Using Pecha Kucha, a Japanese form of storytelling that combines images and words, students from area high schools share stories about their favorite places in nature and their relationship to the earth. Light refreshments and the chance to talk with the storytellers after the program. Free and open to the public.

Get rid of unwanted agricultural waste, household hazardous waste, and expired/unused medication. Pre-register for drop-off by calling Kewaunee County Emergency Management at 920.845.9700 or filling out an online form at kewauneeco.org. More information and guidelines can be found online. Free.

Lend nature a hand and help with grounds clean up at Scandia Village. Free picnic lunch provided at noon by members of the Kiwanis Club of Northern Door.

Newport State Park

Help clean up the park. Everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level. Great family opportunity. Bring work gloves, loppers or pruners if you have them. Meet at the shop/maintenance building. Lunch will be provided. For more information call 920.854.2500.

9 am-noon Earth Day Clean Up
Ridges Sanctuary – Cook-Albert Fuller Center
8166 Hwy. 57, Baileys Harbor

Members and volunteers are invited to help refresh the campus. This year focuses around the Center and Range Lights, spreading mulch, and cleaning up some extended properties. Come prepared to get dirty and bring garden/work gloves. Extra wheelbarrows are welcome. Lunch will be provided. Call 920.839.2802 to volunteer and register for lunch.

Work on cleaning up campsites, trail work, spreading mulch, cleaning the handicap cabin, and invasive species removal. Lunch provided. No experience required. No time commitment needed. Long pants, sturdy shoes, and work gloves recommended. Stop at park office to be directed to a work site.

Escarpment by Roger Kuhns. A documentary focusing on the natural history of Eastern Wisconsin and the Niagara escarpment region of the Great Lakes. Kicked off with music from Small Forest and followed by an after show chat and party. Free.

9 am. Earth Day Presentation

“The Paris UN Climate Change Conference: Some Sobering News, Some Hopeful News,” presented by entomologist Dick Smythe, will focus on international commitments to slow this global threat and mitigate its worst effects. A question and answer period will follow.

“Constellations: What They Are; How We Find Them; How We Use Them” presented by John Beck from Door Peninsula Astronomical Society. Sky viewing in Lot 3 after the presentation, weather permitting. All are welcome to bring binoculars and telescopes. Meet in the Nature Center, Lot 1. Vehicle state park sticker required. Free.
