2,300 Runners Expected for 15th Door County Half Marathon

Peninsula State Park will be a runner’s haven this Saturday, May 6, as the Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K return to the roads of the “emerald treasure.” More than 2,300 runners are expected to take part in either the half marathon or the Nicolet Bay 5K on the closed-road course that’s been called one of the most beautiful in the United States.

“To think that this race, which started with conversations around a table at Al Johnson’s in 2007, is now about to welcome runners for the 15th year is pretty amazing,” said race director Brian Fitzgerald. “That says a lot about how much runners love Door County, but also about how welcoming this community is.”

Those runners have had a massive economic impact on what was once a sleepy May weekend in the county. From lodging and food, to shopping and transportation, the event is credited with bringing an estimated $1.3 million annually to the local economy.

Some portions of the park will be closed to vehicle traffic until 1:30 pm, when the final runners and walkers will cross the finish line. Eagle Tower, Peninsula State Park Golf Course and the welcome center will all be accessible throughout the day.
