2nd Annual Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event

The 2nd Annual Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event, including competitive, educational, and social events, is scheduled for June 18, 19 and 20.

A guided Eco-Tour, merging the joys of paddling with the natural history of Detroit Harbor, is offered June 19. This educational paddle event is an encouraging outing for novice and intermediate paddlers.

Bob Bultman, a representative of the Niagara Escparpment Resource Network, will present “Celebrate Washington Island, Niagara Escarpment Gem” on June 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.

A marathon kayak race circumnavigating Washington Island will start at Red Barn Park, Gislason Beach on June 19. Joe Zellner, a front-line paddler from Grand Marais, Minnesota, will be at the starting line with other elite paddlers to the 22-mile course. Spectators may follow the racers from multiple vantage points on Washington Island.

Those seeking paddling safety skills will be able to receive personal kayak instruction from Tim Pflieger, of Team Leadership Center in Sturgeon Bay. Students must register in advance, as class size is limited.

Sunday morning, June 20, the Crossing Death’s Door Expedition will launch from the Potato Dock on Washington Island. This will be the final event, followed by a Father’s Day brunch at Northport.
