Dear Mary Pat,

My sister wants to get married on a Friday since it’s way more affordable. We keep trying to explain to her that some people might be late for the reception and most everyone will miss the church ceremony since it’s hard for guests to take off from work, or to get kids out of school. Is it inconsiderate to have a Friday wedding? I hear about them more and more. She doesn’t seem to think it’s rude, but the rest of us aren’t so sure.

Signed,

Which Day?

Dear Which Day?,

It is not rude at all when couples choose to get married on a Friday, however, they have to understand that not everyone will be able to make it to a Friday wedding as easily as they would a Saturday wedding. This is also the case for couples who choose destination weddings far away. Just because Jane and John want to get married in Tahiti, that does not mean that their guests can afford to travel there or to take time off of work.

Weddings can be very expensive and couples are under a lot of pressure to put on the “perfect” celebration. Budgets aren’t always in line with these aspirations. If someone looks for more affordable options, that is absolutely respectable. If an invited guest decides that they can’t afford to take off of work and declines to go to the wedding, that is also absolutely respectable.

If your sister and future brother-in-law decide to go forward with a Friday night wedding, they will most likely receive more yes replies if they push the ceremony and reception to as late as possible (5:30 ceremony followed immediately by the reception).

They should get married on any day that they would like.

Good luck,

Mary Pat
