5 Essential Pieces of Gear to Stay Active When It’s Cold Outside

1. Gloves: Whether walking, running, hiking or biking, as the weather turns colder you’ve got to keep those hands warm. For those of us who like to stay active, gloves need to have a snug fit and allow maximum finger movement. Check out the selection at Nor Door Sport & Cyclery in Fish Creek, $14 – $45.

2. Thermal Shirt: A base layer is worn directly against the skin, and should be form fitting. This shirt needs to keep heat in without collecting too much moisture. Try Bay Shore Outdoor Store in Sister Bay or Bay Shore Outfitters in Sturgeon Bay, $35 – $80.

3. Long Underwear: Another base layer must, should fit exactly like your thermal shirt. Depending on the activity you chose, you may want to make sure there’s a good amount of stretch to the fabric. Stop by Path & Paddle in Sturgeon Bay to see their selection, $59.99 – $89.99.

4. Socks: Nothing’s more of a downer than cold feet. Ecology Sports in Sister Bay offers up a fine selection of stylish socks, $15.95 – $29.95.

5. Hat & Scarf: You lose a lot of heat from your head. A good hat is important, but make sure you buy one that fits your needs. If you’re biking, you may prefer something that fits tightly to your head, and is comfortable beneath a helmet. If you’re hiking, a more loosely fitting wool hat may be a better choice. As far as scarves go, you may not want all the bulk and frills, just a warm neck. Neck warmers can be a good option, and SmartWool makes a fantastic one. Check out any of the above-mentioned locations in Door County for scarves, $18 – S60, and hats, $20 – $35.
