625 Kids Attend Altrusa’s Back-to-School Fair

Altrusa International of Door County held the 19th annual Back-to-School Fair at the Sturgeon Bay High School Aug. 5. This year’s fair, with 625 participants, was the largest ever, providing school supplies, new backpacks, school spirit shirts, gym shoes, books and toiletries. More than 100 volunteers and Altrusans staffed the various stations and escorted the children through the fair. Hopes are to continue to increase the number of children served by the fair in future years.

The Back-to-School Fair, Altrusa’s largest community service project, is supported by many business, church and personal donations, as well as various grants.

The Altrusa International Foundation recently honored the Door County chapter with a generous grant of $1,000 to be used for the fair. Altrusan Cheri Meyvis applied for the grant and was accepted by club president and committee chair Pam McCluskey. Fundraising continues year round, so if you’d like to make a donation, go to altrusaofdoorcounty.org.
