The importance of exercise in coping with depression was highlighted in a recent study. More than 1,300 adults with depression were randomized and placed in one of two groups. One group exercised on a regular basis while the other group did not. The results of the 10-week study showed that for most people, exercise helped to diminish their depression levels. The researchers believe that regular exercise “…may reduce depression symptoms as much as medications or psychotherapy.” Unfortunately, many people with depression are withdrawn and not interested in exercising, but it would be in their best interest to do so.
