The Holiday Music Motel’s sixth annual “Love On Holiday: Songs of Love and Love Gone Away” returns Feb. 10 & 11 to Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP).
Much like the songwriting collaboratives of Steel Bridge Songfest and Dark Songs, Love On Holiday brings songwriters together to write and record brand new material for five days prior to the performances. Unlike the other two events, however, Love On Holiday adds the element of visual art into the mix.
First the musicians play spin the bottle for songwriting partners (each group consists of three writers), then each group spins once again to get randomly matched up with a physical work of art that acts as the muse for writing the song. With the process repeated each night, typically 30 to 40 new songs are recorded at the motel during the days prior to the performances. To date, there are more than 1,200 songs written and recorded at the motel.
Expanding upon the spirit of collaboration, for this year’s event The Holiday teamed up with Door County Makers Space – a creative collaborative workspace – located at 26 N 3rd Avenue, where the selected artwork will be on display from 11 am to 4 pm, Feb. 5 – 9.
Songs from last year’s event will be released on Love On Holiday: Songs of Love and Love Gone Away – Volume 5 following the launch of the album on the motel’s internet radio station (SteelBridgeRadio.com) on Feb. 5 at 3:33 pm.
Performances of the newly penned songs take place on Feb. 10 & 11 at Third Avenue Playhouse in Sturgeon Bay. Images of the artwork that inspired each song will be projected on a screen behind the musicians as the piece is performed. Doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 7:30 pm. Admission is $5 at the door.
Jimm McIver will kick off the week with a special house concert at Door County Makers Space on Feb. 4.
