July 4 marks the sixth annual cookout on Rock Island from 11 am – 2 pm, hosted by the Friends of Rock Island (FORI). There will be burgers, brats with buns and condiments, plus beverages, chips, and desserts. The cookout is only the beginning of the day’s activities. There is the silent auction at the Thordarson Boathouse, merchandise will be available for sale, and it’s always a good idea to stroll down to the sand beach or hike to the Pottawatomie Lighthouse where a docent will take guests on a tour.
All of this is possible because of the Friends of Rock Island (FORI) group. This philanthropic organization was started in 1994 and with the help of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been able to restore the 1858 lighthouse on the island. The proceeds from the July 4th events are going to FORI in order to maintain the lighthouse and boathouse as well as other areas of Rock Island State Park.
