Dear Mary Pat,

I get so many Christmas cards this time of year and I never send any out in return. Is this okay, or is it really rude to not reciprocate?

Dear No Glad Tidings,

There is no rule that says that you need to send Christmas cards every year. It is not considered rude to not send cards out around the holidays. Procrastinators always joke about sending New Year’s cards or sending out mass cards for Valentine’s Day. The truth is, some people have the time, desire and discipline to send cards out every year. That’s impressive, but it shouldn’t make you feel guilty if you don’t return the greeting. For your close friends and family, you probably exchange gifts or spend time together. They are the ones you need to focus on.

Now with FaceTime, texting, email, Facebook and other modern conveniences, there are more ways than ever to reach out with friends and acquaintances who don’t live nearby if you chose to. The checklist for the holidays can be overwhelming. Do the best you can to send Christmas joy and cheer to those around you.

Good luck,

Mary Pat
