A Boost in Winter Wheat Production

Winter wheat growers harvested fewer acres this year than in 2013, but an increase in average yields per acre in many of the state’s counties enabled a 5.5-percent boost in total production, according to a recent report by the Wisconsin field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The state’s average yield this year was 65 bushels per acre compared to 58 bushels in 2013. Despite a decrease of 15,000 in the number of harvested acres to 250,000, this year’s crop produced 16.25 million bushels compared to 15.37 million in 2013. Dane County led the state with 1.108 million bushels harvest, followed by Dodge County with 916,000 bushels. Manitowoc County was in third place with 899,000 bushels. Other leading county producers for 2014 were Fond du Lac County with 780,000 bushels, Winnebago County with 750,000 bushels (up from 593,000 in 2013), Door County with 671,000 bushels, Sheboygan County with 656,000 bushels (up from 473,000 bushels in 2013), Calumet County with 649,000 bushels (up from 519,000 in 2013) and Brown County with 539,000 bushels.
