A Door County Local Librarian: Marcia Carr

There is no better place to find literature of all kind than your local library, and no one better to help you find what you’re looking for than the librarians. Meet your local librarian, Marcia Carr of the Washington Island Branch Library.

Favorite section of the library: Children’s section and adult fiction, also history.

Favorite author: My favorite author as a child – and as an adult – is Dr. Seuss. His books are still as popular today as they were back in the ‘50s. For children’s books I also love Kevin Henkes and Karma Wilson. For adult reading I enjoy anything written by Bill Bryson, Laurie R. King, Anne Perry – the list could go on and on.

What book should every patron read: The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom are both wonderful books that teach us to love and value our lives and the gifts we have been given.

Favorite customer question: How does the library get such fast Internet service? (Living on the Island speedy Internet service can be hard to come by sometimes. A big thank you to the OWLSnet and Nicolet Library systems for making our connections so “speedy.”)

Favorite part of working at the library: I particularly enjoy interacting with the children but I also enjoy meeting all the wonderful people who come through our door. They come from many different places and have many, many interests. I’ve learned a lot by working here.

What is a library service that many people are unaware of: Many people are unaware that the Washington Island Branch of the Door County Library also serves as the school library for the Washington Island School. We get weekly visits from the elementary grades and see the high school students whenever the need arises. It is a wonderful part of our operation and selecting materials with the school children in mind is an especially fun part of my job.

Interests outside the library: I enjoy working around my home, yard and garden and entertaining family and friends. I am a partner with my husband in our Re/Max Real Estate Agency on the Island and am active in our church. Most of all I love spending time with my two adorable grandsons whenever they can make it to the Island to visit us. I also love to read!

The library is an incredible resource, chock full of not only the literature that rounds out academic reading lists, but novels, memoirs, mysteries, and non-fiction books touching on a variety of subjects, from writers all over the world. The Door County Libraries serve local residents and visitors, offer DVDs, CDs, and magazines, an extensive interlibrary loan and free Internet.
