A Duo Concert of Organ and Violin

Ken Cowan, one of North America’s finest concert organists and recording artists, returns to Door County in collaboration with violinist Lisa Shihoten in concert at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church on June 15 at 7 pm. Their duo concert is the first of this summer’s mini-series of two concerts featuring the church’s pipe organ.

Praised for his artistry, technique and imaginative programming, Cowan maintains a rigorous performing schedule, which takes him to major concert venues across America, Canada, Europe and Asia. In addition to a busy schedule of concerts, Cowan is head of the organ program at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

A recitalist, chamber musician, and award-winning violinist, Lisa Shihoten made her solo New York debut at Avery Fisher Hall under the direction of Kurt Masur. Shihoten and husband Ken tour extensively for duo concerts.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the installation of the organ, designed and built especially for Shepherd of the Bay by Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, Ltd. of Lake City, Iowa. Each year since the acquirement of the organ, the church has presented a mini-series of two concerts featuring the instrument, played by regionally, nationally, and internationally acclaimed performers.

The pair of duo concerts highlights the organ’s versatility in ensemble with other instruments – Cowan and Shihoten on June 15 followed by Peter Richard Conte, Grand Court Organist, assisted by Andrew Ennis on flügelhorn, on July 27 at 7 pm.

There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be collected. Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church is located at 11836 Highway 42 in Ellison Bay. For more information, call 920.854.2988 or visit shepherdofthebay.org/events.
