A Midsummer Shindig, Door County Style

Young lovers, fairies, royalty and rustics set the scene for Midsummer Night’s Dream, a merry tale of mistaken identity, tricksters and enchantment. Though there are no fairies at Fyr Bal, the festival upholds the highest standards of a Midsummer shindig, Door County style.

Fry Bal, which takes place on June 19 – 21, celebrates the summer solstice the longest day of the year and the time of maximum sunshine. To us Wisconsinites, it means we all rejoice in the warmth that spring brings, and give thanks with a festival.

The Midsummer’s Music Festival Concert, which takes place Friday evening at the Hardy Gallery on Anderson Dock, delights audiences every year. The concert features chamber music with a fantastical theme, played by professional musicians as the sun sets over Ephraim’s shores.

The ceremonial Saturday evening bonfires represent the burning of the “Winter Witch” and the long days of summer. Feel free to join hands around the bonfire, singing, “Ding, Dong, the Winter Witch is Dead! Which old Witch? The Winter Witch! Ding Dong! The Wicked Winter Witch is dead…” Then, enjoy some fireworks.
