A Taste of the Food and Poetry of Italy

Write On, Door County and Door County Poet Laureate Sharon Auberle present the first of a quarterly series of poetry potlucks with an international focus. The first potluck will focus on the food and poetry of Italy and will be held Jan. 19, 6 pm at the Sister Bay Village Hall. Accompanying the poetry and food, Cristy Cristensen will perform classical Italian music on guitar. The program is free and families are encouraged to participate. Participants should bring an Italian dish to share and a poem either about Italy or by an Italian poet to read.

“Some of my favorite things for a cold winter’s night are hearty food, good conversation and music and poetry. I’m probably not alone in this, so hope to see many of you like-minded friends at the Sister Bay Village Hall for a warm and tasty evening – and who knows, it might inspire a new or return visit to Italy,” said Auberle, who was appointed Door County’s Poet Laureate in March 2017 and will serve in the role through March 2019.

Part of the role of Poet Laureate is to inspire an appreciation for poetry throughout the community. Auberle and Write On designed the poetry potlucks to encourage everyone to discover new poets and poems and an appreciation of other cultures. “We are excited to work with Sharon and develop this series of quarterly potlucks,” said Jerod Santek, Director of Write On.

The other scheduled potlucks are April 20, focusing on Japan; July 20, a French-themed poetry potluck picnic at Write On’s property in Juddville; and Nov. 16 with a focus on India. All potlucks begin at 6 pm. The locations for the April and November potlucks will be announced later this year.

Potlucks are free, but people are asked to call 920.868.1457 if they plan to attend. For more information visit writeondoorcounty.org.
