Abstract Photography at Art League Gallery

Nationally recognized photographer Steve Stanger is The Gallery of the Door County Art League’s self-taught artist of the week beginning Aug. 20.

Stanger’s abstract photography has received numerous awards in Door County including the Pulse’s Hal Prize in 2012 and 2014; the Miller Juried Exhibit 2014; the Hardy Gallery Juried Annual in 2014; and a first place in the DCAL Showcase.

Stationed with the Army Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Cali., Stanger was influenced by the work of Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, who were living and working in the area. He’s also inspired by Alvin Langdon Coburn, and often creates compositions activated by zigzagging, diagonal forms and geometric abstract imagery. Using digital creativity, Stanger captures his abstractions by using in-camera multiple exposures and a vortoscope (kaleidoscope), as well as focusing his perspective on reflected objects using a closer than normal point of view. He creates a contemplative, yet soothing and interactive relationship between himself and the viewer through these images.

With his wife Arlene, Stanger retired to Baileys Harbor seven years ago after 28 years as a township assessor in Lake County, Illinois.
