Adopt a Soldier Fundraiser August 6

The Adopt A Soldier-Door County program cares for 190 men and women serving in the armed forces, sending them eight “care packages” a year filled with snacks, candy, energy drinks, personal care items, small puzzles and board games, Door County-related items, handmade items, and other things they have requested. The goal is to let them know they are greatly appreciated and cared for while they are serving us far from their families and friends. Youth from local schools and organizations include handwritten notes of thanks to them. Postage alone for these 1,500 shipments every year costs between $13 and $19 a package, so Adopt A Soldier-Door County is having its annual big fundraiser Sunday, Aug. 6, at Martin Park in Sturgeon Bay. Volunteers are needed to help make this event a success and let us continue to provide these greatly appreciated packages of care from Door County. Helpers are needed at 11 am to set up tables and items for the lunch grill area; grillers, food order takers, refreshment and meal servers, and cashiers for one-hour shifts from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm; cashiers; silent auction monitors and helpers; cleanup throughout the day for one-hour shifts from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm; fundraiser and donation collections through the concert area and at the main table from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. Concerts by Wisconsin favorites Copper Box and Last Man Standing, an AYCE pancake breakfast at the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, lunch on the grill, silent auctions and more are some of the main features of this year’s fundraiser.
