Algoma’s Shanty Days

This annual, weekend-long event is Algoma’s “celebration of the lake,” complete with a parade, 5K run, juried art-and-craft fair, food, live music, beach volleyball, pool tournament, fishing contest, car cruise and more. Food includes Belgian trippe, gyros, walking tacos, roasted corn, mini donuts, roasted nuts, gourmet corn, roasted corn with all the fixings, and ceviche. You can also pick up hot, fresh cookies from the Cookie Crate in the art-and-craft area and take home some cookie dough.

Friday, Aug. 9

Saturday, Aug. 10
8 am 5K walk/run: Race through charming downtown Algoma; see historic fishing shanties on the river; and run along Lake Michigan. (Search for “shanty days” at runsignup.com.)
9 am Superhero kids’ fun run (Search for “shanty days” at runsignup.com.)
10 am Volleyball tournament: Crescent Beach will host teams from around the state in the Battle on the Beach; the top prize is $500.
10 am – 5 pm Art, craft and street fair
11:30 am Car cruise
12 pm Parade: Enjoy custom-built floats, entertainment, clowns, candy and more!
1 pm Live music by Dr. Bombay and the Ryan Thompson Bluegrass Band
2 pm 8-ball partners/last pocket pool tournament
3-10 pm Teen Stage: Free fun and entertainment for ages 13-20 at Heritage Park: bed races, mocktails and live bands (5-10 pm), including Scary Canaries, Replacing the Past and Eminence

Event Hours and Cost
Entry to the main grounds requires a wristband for ages 12 and older.
It’s $10 per person at the gate, valid Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Sunday-only entry is $5 per person.
Main Grounds Hours
Friday: 3 pm – midnight
Saturday: 11 am* – midnight
Sunday: 11 am – 9 pm
*Parade special: No main-grounds entrance fee on Saturday, 11 am – 3 pm. If you leave and wish to re-enter, a wristband is required for entry or re-entry after 3 pm.
Kids’ Area
Kids can enjoy bouncy houses, face painting, ice cream and more on the north side of the main grounds. There is a separate kids’ area charge of $10 for unlimited time during the entire weekend: Friday, 4-8 pm; Saturday, 1-8 pm; and Sunday, 1-5 pm.
Important: Dogs are not allowed on the main grounds or Crescent Beach. Leashed dogs are permitted in all other public areas during Shanty Days, but please be mindful that large crowds and heat can negatively affect animals.
