Alley Closes, Remodel Begins on Former Younkers Building

The Sturgeon Bay Common Council approved the closure of the alley behind 58 N. 3rd Ave. in Sturgeon Bay between both buildings through Nov. 15, 24 hours a day, while the former Younkers building is transformed into the Marketplace by Bliss.

The alley needed to be closed between the two buildings to remove the skywalk and fill the tunnel. The contractor, Bayland Builders of Green Bay, asked that the alley remain closed for the duration of the remodel for use as a lay-down area so that dumpsters and lifts would not have to be left on the street.

The contractor was required to notify affected property owners and businesses of the closure prior to Aug. 5, the requested start date. The closure date depended on the U.S. Postal Service moving the mailboxes out of the alley and onto North 4th Avenue between the parking lot entrance and Michigan Street, where a new temporary mail-drop location would be created.

The contractor also asked that the two-hour parking on Louisiana Street not be enforced for the duration of the remodel.
