Altrusa of Door County Provides Bookcase and Books for Habitat for Humanity Homes

• Since 2006, Altrusa of Door County has been providing Door County Habitat for Humanity with a bookcase and books for family members at the dedication of each of the homes. During this time, 13 bookcases and at least 400 books have been provided to the recipients of these 13 homes. The books have been provided by members of the Altrusa organization, which now numbers 50 members, and by the Friends of Door County Libraries. Each child and parent received approximately 10 books.

On Dec. 21, Judy Juadis and Jan Campbell attended the dedication of the latest Habitat home. The event was attended by volunteers, community leaders, and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans representatives who sponsored the build. A bookcase and books were presented to the new owner and her children along with information on the Altrusa organization. A tour of the home and refreshments followed the program.

• Julie Cmeyla, Kelsie Marsh, Nicole Laplant, Michelle Leist, Susan Gigot Klein and Alycia Barttl are the recipients of the $750 Mary Louise Kiehnau Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to women who plan to further their education in an Adult Continuing Education or a degree program. Each applicant must be a resident of Door County for at least 6 months prior to application. The scholarship program is available to a full or part-time female student who has attended at least one year of college or women returning to school with the intent of improving their career potential.

Scholarships are awarded on a combination of the applicants desire to improve her education, financial need, academic ability and community service. If interested in applying, contact Rebecca Weinert at 920.493.8222 before mid-June, 2012.

• The Inn at Cedar Crossing in Sturgeon Bay will host United Way Wednesdays in March. When customers have dinner at the Inn at Cedar Crossing on Wednesdays in March, 10 percent of their payment will go to United Way of Door County.

• An Opening Art Reception will be held to raise funds for the United Way’s Endowment Fund.

On March 2 from 5 – 7 pm, the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay will showcase 40 original fused glass artworks. Guests have the opportunity to bid on their favorites. This year’s fused glass will be in the forms of pendants, plates, sun catchers, and garden stakes. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres, beverages and music are part of this annual event.

The Endowment Fund was established in 1997 to assist in the future financial stability for the United Way organization and the Door County community.

• To ensure that the Door County YMCA can continue to provide Door County residents with life enhancing services, the Door County Y is launching its Annual Community Support campaign (Strong Kids Campaign).

This year, the Door County Y hopes to raise $450,000, which will be returned to the community in financial assistance on a need basis. Co-chairs for this year’s campaign are Dick and Carol Skare, Fish Creek, and Jonathan and Jennifer Meacham, Sturgeon Bay.

The annual Strong Kids Campaign will kick-off Feb. 27 with My Y Week. The theme this year is “Let Everyone Achieve their Potential (LEAP).”

On Monday, area residents are invited to test their knowledge by answering trivia questions for a chance to win a prize. Tuesday will be a day for enjoying snacks with Y staff and friends offering homemade baked goods for sale.

Wednesday, anyone wishing to join the Y will pay only $29 for the joining fee. On Thursday, community members can “leap” into the Y and try a fitness class for no charge. Friday will celebrate Strong Kids with free party favors and popcorn all day. The Fish Creek facility will hold a “Dance for Strong Kids” that evening from 6 – 9 pm. Refreshments will be served at the dance.

• Birch Creek has received a matching grant of $12,620 from the Wisconsin Arts Board. This is a 2012 Creation and Presentation Program Grant awarded through a competitive process and supports Birch Creek’s annual operating expenses. In granting this award, the Arts Board recognizes Birch Creek as an organization with the highest level of quality in its programs, community outreach and administration.

Birch Creek Music Performance Center, Inc. is a summer music school in Egg Harbor for advanced young musicians from across the country. Students are taught by nationally known performers and educators during the day, and perform alongside them in concerts at night. Birch Creek’s mission is to provide their students with significant performance experience in front of live audiences.

• The online application for Cellcom scholarships is now open. Cellcom will award 14 graduating high school seniors across its service area with $500 scholarships this year.

Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic record, potential to succeed, leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience and an essay on community impact. Financial need is not considered.

Applicants must reside within a county in Wisconsin or Michigan where Cellcom operates and plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or technical school.

• The Northern Door Health & Wellness Ministry is currently offering a three-part series on “Recognizing Risky Youth Behaviors,” a guide for parents, grandparents, or guardians of children in grades 4 through 12.

Pastor Bruce Foster will present the third and final program in this Community Health Information Program (CHIP) series, “Healthy and Unhealthy Sexual Behaviors,” on March 4 from 4 – 5 pm at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay.

In an age when childhood sexual abuse and victimization is increasingly prevalent, it is important for parents and other caretakers to understand what is normal sexual development and behavior in children and teenagers, and what behaviors should be considered risky youth behavior.

The program is free and open to the public.

• Door County Dental Care is celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month by providing a day of free preventive oral health care on Feb. 22 as part of the dental clinic program at Ministry Door County Medical Center (MDCMC).

Doctors Tyler Hubbard, D.D.S. and Regan Luders, D.D.S. will provide children with basic check-ups, cleanings, x-rays, exams and fluoride varnish.

“It’s important to educate parents and children about the importance of oral health. It’s essential to the overall health of a child,” said Dr. Luders, D.D.S.

The American Dental Association celebrates National Children’s Dental Health Month with Give Kids A Smile®, a program where dentists nationwide provide free oral health care services to children from low-income families.

• The ice has finally formed, and it’s time to wager a guess for when the ice will officially “go out” of Sister Bay. Voting boxes are in businesses around Sister Bay waiting for votes. In 2011, the Ice Out raft started floating at 4:15 pm on April 9. When will it float this year?

For 2012, a number of businesses are offering prizes to the person who guesses the date and time of day closest to when the official Ice Out raft marks the ice leaving the bay. A winner will be chosen from each business’ box: Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant, Bay Shore Outdoor Store, Bhirdo’s Shell, Husby’s Food & Spirits, JJ’s La Puerta, Lamperts Yard Inc., On Deck Clothing Company, Passtimes Books, Sister Bay Automotive, Sister Bay Bowl, Village Clothier, and Yacht Works.

The 74th Ice Out Contest is sponsored by the Sister Bay Advancement Association and the Door County Advocate.

• The Door County Medical Center (DCMC) Auxiliary is accepting applications for tuition assistance for outstanding area high school seniors, DCMC employees and Door County students who are planning a career in health care.

Applications are available for seniors in Door County Schools from the Guidance Counselors. Applications for DCMC employees are available on the Ministry Intranet. Applications for Door County Residents are available by visit http://www.ministryhealth.org.

• The Knights of Columbus and Gibraltar Music Boosters are hosting the annual Spaghetti Jazz Dinner on Feb. 19 at St. Rosalia’s Church in Sister Bay. Doors will open at 1 pm and the music will begin at 2 pm. Spaghetti will be prepared and served by the Knights of Columbus after the first jazz set is complete through the end of the event at 5 pm.

Local businesses are donating items for silent auction. The event is a fundraiser for the Gibraltar music programs.

Tickets are available at the door for $10 per adult and $7 per child. Children ages 6 and under are free.

• Each year, United Way of Door County awards scholarships for Door County students who are continuing their post-high school education. This year there will be four, one-time $500 scholarships for college or technical school awarded.

Applications detailing the criteria for consideration for the awards have been distributed to the local high schools and the Volunteer Center of Door County. The application is also available on the United Way’s website, http://www.unitedwaydc.com.

Scholarships are given on the basis of their community involvement, rather than academic achievement.

Former United Way Youth Board members Michele Lodl and Jacque Jorns of Sturgeon Bay initiated the service-based scholarship program.
