An Artist, An Influence

Artwork by Franne Dickinson.

The first critique for my pastel paintings took place from the trunk of my Toyota Camry in the summer of 2000. With characteristic enthusiasm, and at the request of my precocious 6-year-old daughter, Franne Dickinson didn’t hesitate to leave her home studio to hold a critique of my crude works in her driveway.

Franne is well known for her colorful, energetic style and elegant line work. As an admirer of her paintings, I was both embarrassed by my daughter’s bold request and anxious to hear what she had to say. During that first critique I received encouragement, a suggestion to buy better materials and an invitation to paint with Franne. I followed through immediately.

Living in Milwaukee at the time, when I would visit Door County, I would stop by Franne’s studio to view her latest pieces, talk about art and occasionally receive another critique. Through the years, I came to realize that we had much in common – political views, a love of travel and a passion for seeking both joy and excellence in our chosen media.

Franne’s generous influence on my work went beyond technique. Her encouragement was instrumental in helping me to believe in my abilities as a pastel artist.

Franne introduced me to pastel and welcomed me into the Door County art community as a whole. As an early mentor, she strengthened my resolve to increase my artistic skills and maintain my own enthusiasm for my art.
