Annual Washington Island Music Festival Set for August 3 – 14

Summer 2009 marks the 18th annual Washington Island Music Festival, set for Monday, August 3 through Friday, August 14. This two-week event is filled with evening concerts, a music camp and concert for children, workshops, and more.

The Music Festival has proven to be a dynamic and innovative program that has grown over the years, and offers many music and concert activities.

Some of the highlights of the Festival include:

• August 3:  Opening concert featuring works from the 19th century German composer Alexander Ernst Fesca, with guest soloist Sara Colburn, 7:30 pm.

• August 5, 7, & 13:  Music Appreciation with Samantha George, with informal discussion of works that will be performed at the Festival. The talks on August 5 and 13 are at 10 am, and the talk on August 7 is at 2 pm.

• August 8:  Open Rehearsal, 10 am.

• August 9:  “Scandinavian Soiree” concert, which includes a ferry ride to the Island, an hour and a half bus tour of the Island, and a special concert, 4:30 pm.

• August 10 – 14:  A free five-session Children’s Music Camp is being offered for ages 5 through 12. Advance registration is preferred.

• August 13:  The “Under the Big Top” program is a much-loved opportunity for local musicians to show their musical aptitude, and is planned for 7:30 pm at the Red Barn on the Island.

• August 14:  Festival Finale with the Island Chorus, 7:30 pm.

Tickets for the Festival are $15 for adults, $6 for students under 18, and free for children under six. All festival events take place at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center unless otherwise specified.
