Approaches to Portraiture

“Portrait of Man Ray” by Liz Maltman.

The sixth annual Door Prize for Portraiture opens for public viewing June 26 at Chez Cheryl Artspace. This invitational exhibition features 26 regional emerging and established artists brought together to celebrate the portrait. This exhibit focuses on the varied styles and rich interpretation presented in a variety of media. Initially inspired by the Archibald Prize of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, the Door Prize was the idea of Cheryl Stidwell Parker’s and her husband Steve Lavell, a native of Australia.

“We share this event with our friends and art lovers and each year have been thrilled with the response from the artists who have been invited to contribute to the flavor or this event,” said host Stidwell Parker.

Artists invited to this year’s exhibit are: Sharon Auberle, Donna Brown, Julia Van Roo Bresnahan, Kathleen Eaton, Sally Everhardus, Ed Fenendael, David Franke, Lynn Gilchrist, Emmett Johns, Ken Klopack, Mynn Lanphier, Liz Maltman, Mary Ulm Mayhew, Colleen McCarty, Ralph Murre, Micheal Nitsch, Tim Nyberg, Rick Risch, Suzanne Rose, Paula Swaydan Grebel, Stephanie Trenchard, Pipka Ulvilden, Mary White, Cynthia Wolfe, Archelle “Buttons “ Wolst and Mark Zelten.

Each year a juror selects several honorable mentions and best in show awards. Graeme Reid, Museum of Wisconsin Art’s Director of Collections and Exhibitions, will return as the guest juror. He will offer comments and present awards at the artists’ reception on June 25 at 6:30 pm.

The exhibit will be open for public viewing 10 am – 4 pm on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday beginning June 26 through July 31. Chez Cheryl is located at 8360 High Plateau Road in Baileys Harbor. For more information call 920.421.1690.
