Art to Celebrate “Coast Guard City” Designation

“Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, Lake Superior” by George F. Schoenberger. The painting depicts the original Cutter Mackinaw leading a convoy of Great Lakes cargo vessels through the ice.

In celebration of Sturgeon Bay’s designation as a “Coast Guard City,” the Door County Maritime Museum is hosting a new Missions of the U.S. Coast Guard exhibit. The exhibit features 15 original paintings from the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program along with informational panels, models, photographs, and selected items from the museum’s collection. The art depicts the day-to-day activities of Coast Guard men and women and includes works highlighting Marine Safety Detachment Sturgeon Bay and the Cutter Mobile Bay. The exhibit will run from May 10 to October 26, 2014.

The exhibit is housed primarily in the Reddin Bridge Room gallery; however, visitors will find additional Coast Guard related art and artifacts in other locations throughout the maritime museum.

The Door County Maritime Museum is located between the downtown bridges on Sturgeon Bay’s waterfront at 120 North Madison Avenue. The museum is open 10 am – 5 pm daily. For more information, visit uscg.mil/art and dcmm.org.
