Nationally-known early childhood educator and Sister Bay summer resident, Debbie Clement, is thrilled to unveil her newest children’s picture book, Red, White and Blue, in Door County on Sunday, October 17. Open to the public, the event will take place at the Northern Door Child Care Center in Sister Bay at 4 pm.
Clement’s third children’s book is based on the text of a song she wrote immediately following 9/11. Over the past five years, Clement created the book’s illustrations as representational fabric quilts, completing 16 quilts for the 32-page book.
The very first quilt Debbie created for the book features a portrayal of Ephraim and Eagle Harbor, complete with the familiar profile of white churches on the hill and the prominent landmark of Wilson’s with its red and white striped awning. There’s also a two-page illustration of a hilly Door County farm that includes an orchard in bloom.
Clement presents workshops around the country, speaking to teachers and early education administrators of young children about the importance of art, music and movement to the developing child. By incorporating everything from song to signing, she fully captivates her audience of children and adults alike.
