Artistic Journey to Abstraction

“Stacked Planes: Orchard IV,” oil on canvas, by Marjorie Mau.

The Door County Art League’s (DCAL) monthly meeting on June 25 will feature Marjorie Mau, who will present a retrospective of her artistic journey, as demonstrated by her current series of paintings: Stacked Planes – The Orchards.

In discussing how her Door County orchard paintings were created, Mau said, “Patterns and placement I have been drawn to from ground view were all the more alluring during several winter (airplane) flights above the orchards. From the expansive elevation, I could stack and compress line, space and shape into intentional abstraction.”

Originally a ceramics artist, Mau will explain how that experience influenced her focus on the containment of images in her paintings.

Mau currently has exhibits at Woodwalk Gallery and Red Contemporary Gallery in Steamboat Springs, Colo. She has been an art instructor at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay and St. Norbert College.

This presentation will be held at the Gibraltar Fire Station on County F in Fish Creek at 7 pm, and is free and open to the public.

DCAL membership is available to all persons interested in creating, promoting and supporting the visual arts in Door County. For more information visit http://www.doorcountyartleague.org.
