Astronomy Day at Crossroads

Astronomy Day 2018, sponsored by the Door Peninsula Astronomical Society (DPAS), is scheduled for Oct. 20. The DPAS offers this educational outreach annually at the Crossroads Astronomy Campus, 2200 Utah Street.

The 2018 theme is “Waves” and is part of the Wisconsin Science Festival. This year features a lecture at 7 pm to educate and challenge advanced high school students, college students and adults. “Einstein Space Time: Gravitational Waves” is presented by Michael Olson, St. Norbert College Associate Professor.

At 1 and 2 pm, the community is invited to the Astronomy Center to see a Portable Microdome Planetarium, with engineer Aram Friedman.

In the STARgarden, from 2 – 4:45 pm, family-friendly, hands-on demonstrations will include wave-centered activities; a telescope zoo; and tours of the Leif Everson Observatory. A rocket launch is scheduled for 4:30 pm. At 6 pm DPAS will hold a First Light Ceremony for their new telescope, a 16-inch hyperbolic-mirror telescope.
