Aureliuses Help Students to Create “A Sense of Place”

David Aurelius and his wife Jeanne are helping students at Phillips Middle School create a mural in a teaching residency sponsored by the Friends of Fred Smith.

Students have worked for the last few months to complete the mural with the help of volunteers and instructors. The Aureliuses, Door County-based artists, are guiding youngsters through the creative process. The clay scene combines a mix of natural, cultural and architectural features collectively defining the unique character of students’ hometown. The school, fire department and other fixtures among city buildings also found their way into the design. Famed Phillips folk artist Fred Smith even has a place on the mural next to one of his concrete and glass creations.

The mural is 4 x 11 feet and will be installed in the school in the spring. The Phillips Middle School mural will represent the 21st such work of art the Aureliuses have helped student groups complete.
