Awards Made to Clear Former Nelson Property

The Baileys Harbor Town Board awarded three bids to aid in the clearing of the former Nelson property, which will be turned into a public park.

During a Sept. 12 town board meeting, the board awarded the Nelson-site garage-removal project to K. Allen Gallery. Gallery owner Keith Clayton – the only bidder on the request for proposal (RFP) issued by the town – will move the standalone garage to his own property in Sister Bay before Nov. 4.

Other buildings on the Nelson property will be demolished. During a Sept. 19 special town board meeting, the contract to demolish the Nelson site and buildings was awarded to the only bidder, JF Construction of Ellison Bay, for $264,275.

Though the completion date for the project in the original RFP was Nov. 18, JF Construction offered to reduce its fee by $15,000 if the town pushed the completion date back to March 1, 2023, to give the company more time to complete the project. The town approved this change during the Sept. 19 meeting.

JF Construction’s start date will depend on its other projects, but it could be around mid-December. In addition to demolishing buildings on the Nelson property, JF Construction offered to remove the Larsen-site house at 8149 Hwy 57. Once the location of Darlene’s Beauty Parlor, the town-owned lot will be converted into an overflow parking lot for the Nelson-property public park.

During the Sept. 19 meeting, the board decided to republish the RFP for the Larsen-site house removal. No proposals were made for the first RFP, but some interested parties contacted the town about the property after proposals could no longer be accepted.

The republished Larsen RFP will be largely the same as the original, but it will include a later completion date and require the awardee to complete site-restoration work.A third project – for asbestos abatement at the Nelson and Larsen sites – was awarded to Asbestos Removal for $20,735 during the Sept. 19 meeting. This will be completed by Oct. 14, 2022.
