Backpack Buddy Program Serves 221 Children

For 12 years, the nonprofit Feed and Clothe My People has been delivering nutritional food items to schools in brown lunch bags through the Backpack Buddy Program, which currently serves 221 children, four years old through fifth grade, who live in low-income households.

Schools that collaborate with Feed My People include Southern Door, Sevastopol, Sturgeon Bay and Door County Head Start. Community volunteers organize, prepare, pack and deliver bins of food bags to the school doors. The food items vary weekly, but 30% is fresh fruit. One local item is dried cherries from Country Ovens in Forestville.

Door County Medical Center prints materials for the bags free of charge. These materials include a poem, note of encouragement and information about healthy living.Feed My People – supported by donations from local individuals and organizations – covers the costs for the Backpack Buddy Program, which has been well received by the families it serves.
