Sand Beach Press in Baileys Harbor has published Words, Women and Wednesdays: Twelve Women Who Shaped a City of the Frontier, which discusses the factors that led to the quick growth of Appleton, Wisconsin. With careful scholarship and research, author Bonnie G. Buchanan highlights the accomplishments and contributions of 12 women who arrived in Appleton in the mid- to late 1850s, including founding a literary study club that continues today, after 138 years.
Estella Lauter, a UW-Oshkosh professor emerita and author of Women as Mythmakers, said of the book, “Based on archival research with notes and appendices, Bonnie Buchanan’s engaging book provides fascinating revelations of the substantive roles women played in building a viable Midwestern community. … Their determination to continue their own education and that of other women is an important element in the untold history of Appleton, Wisconsin. Both the Wednesday Club and the book are multifaceted gems.”
