Two of the most unique lighthouses in Door County, the Baileys Harbor Range Lights, will be open for tours during the Door County Maritime Museum’s Lighthouse Festival, June 10 – 12. The Ridges Sanctuary, which manages the Range Lights, will open the lighthouses from 10 am – 4 pm each day. A donation is requested to help with restoration of the Lower Range Light, which will take place this summer.
The Baileys Harbor Range Lights, rather than warning ships away from an area, were built to guide ships safely into the harbor. Built in 1869 at the same time as the Cana Island Lighthouse, six range lights of their class and style were built on the Great Lakes at that time. Only three of these are still standing today – one at Presque Isle, Michigan, one at Copper Harbor, Michigan, and the Range Lights at Baileys Harbor. Both Range Lights, the oil house and the two-seater privy are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Ridges Sanctuary is located at 8288 Highway Q in Baileys Harbor. For more information call 920.839.2802 or visit http://www.RidgesSanctuary.org.
