Baseball: Eagles’ Offense Roars Past Tigers

Southern Door’s baseball team erupted for 15 hits, including six doubles and two home runs, when the No. 3-seeded Eagles won their WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal at home Tuesday against No. 6-seeded Howards Grove, 15-5, in five innings.

Southern Door’s leading hitters included Jack Peterson, who was a triple short of hitting for the cycle by batting 3-4 with a single, double, home run and three RBI. Tyler Neinas went 2-4 with a single, double and three RBI. Jaden Diller was 2-3 with a single and a double with two RBI. Alec Guilette hit 2-2 with a single and a double with an RBI. Christian Counard went 1-2 with a two-run homer.

After tallying three runs in the bottom of the first, the Eagles rallied for 11 runs on 11 hits in the bottom of the second to take a 14-0 lead.

Upon Southern Door holding a double-digit lead after two frames, Diller left the mound when Will Jandrin came in to pitch the final three innings. That early exit made Diller available to pitch in Wednesday’s regional championship game at No. 2-seeded Kiel, which won its semifinal over No. 7-seeded Brillion, 6-3.

Southern Door plated its final run in the bottom of the fourth when a hit by Neinas drove in Drew Daoust from third base to extend the lead to 15-0.

That additional run helped the Eagles end the game early in the fifth inning via the 10-run rule after the Tigers were unable to pull within single digits when they responded in the top of the frame with five runs, which included Jandrin giving up a three-run homer to Drew Damrow.
