Baseball: Vikings Sting Hornets in Semifinals

Gibraltar/Washington Island’s baseball team needed every run it scored Tuesday when the No. 3-seeded Vikings tallied a run in the first, fourth and fifth innings and won their WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal at home over the No. 6-seeded Rosholt Hornets, 3-2.

Of Gibraltar/Washington Island’s 9 hits, Brady Kita and Aidan Purinton had two hits apiece. Kita doubled, as did Bennett Isaacson. Will Friedenfels, who singled and had a sacrifice fly, drove in two runs. Carl Burgess, who singled and had a sacrifice bunt, drove in the other run.

Isaacson pitched all seven innings to record the victory, allowing a pair of earned runs on 10 hits with a walk while striking out seven.

The Vikings advance to Wednesday’s regional championship in Stevens Point against No. 2-seeded Pacelli, which won its semifinal Tuesday over No. 7-seeded Lena, 4-2.
