Beach of the Week: Sand Bay Town Park

Tucked away on the lake side of Liberty Grove in Sand Bay Town Park, Sand Bay Beach is both a versatile and relatively low-traffic beach. Depending on the day, it could be a great place to participate in an energetic beach scene or take a summer beach read and relax.

A large, grassy area contains playground equipment, grills and picnic tables. There’s plenty of space for kids to run around, yet the area isn’t large enough for parents to lose sight of their little ones. Picnic opportunities abound!

A long, wooden boardwalk leads from the parking lot, through the grass and out onto a wooden viewing platform from which the sandy beach curves away gently. Even with the high water levels, there’s still adequate beach space to spread out a towel and lounge in the sand.

The sandy-bottomed, shallow water makes for ideal swimming – even though the lake side is a little chilly early in the summer. And if swimming doesn’t float your boat, try the kayak launch for a quick, convenient paddle.

Sand Bay Beach is a great place to visit even after the sun sets – it’s known as a prime spot for viewing the night sky and meteor showers.
