Belgian Heritage Center Hosts Author Irene Litz-Barre

The Belgian Heritage Center, 1255 County DK in Brussels, will host Milwaukee-area author Irene Litz-Barre on May 25. She will speak twice – at 10:30 and 11:30 am – about her book, Following the Lines: World War II as Experienced by a Belgian Girl. Belgian pie and coffee will be served, and she will be available to meet with attendees and discuss her experiences until 1 pm.

Litz-Barre’s book tells the story of her teenage years in Belgium during the chaos of World War II. In May 1940, after the German invasion, her father was sent to the front, and she and her mother evacuated under German Stuka bomber attacks, finding refuge in southern France. Three months later, they returned across the German demarcation line and found her father back home – he had twice escaped from the Germans. Soon, he was dangerously mixing secret underground activity with his Gendarmerie job supervised by the Germans.
