Belgian Kermiss Celebration in Namur

What is a Kermiss? It could be described as faith, food, fun, family and friends. To older folks who live in rural, southern Door County, mention the word Kermiss and it conjures up fond memories of yesteryear.

Having gone by the wayside in recent years, this celebration that took place in Belgian communities from Brussels to Champion from Labor Day to mid-November, is being resurrected by the Family Centers of Door County, Inc. in partnership with the Peninsula Belgian American Club and the Door County Folk Alliance. On Sunday, September 7, from 11 am – 4 pm Camp Wabansi, located on the shores of Green Bay southwest of Namur (1242 Bayshore Rd.) will be alive with Belgian history, card games, and heritage dancing featuring live music by the Sugar on the Floor Barn Dance Orchestra. You may even hear some folks speaking Walloon!

With no Packer game to watch that day, celebrate Grandparents Day at this intergenerational event. From 11 am – 1 pm purchase Belgian food, including pie, trippe, chicken booyah and other American selections, or participate in a Cooyah card party. From 1 – 2 pm a special presentation about Belgian history will take place, and from 2 – 4 pm participate in a Family Dance. All dances are taught by a caller, no previous experience necessary.

This is an alcohol free event. Please, no carry ins allowed. Held rain or shine.
