Birch Creek Faculty Spotlights

• Dedicated music educator Audrey Morrison is a precious jewel in Birch Creek’s faculty roster. In addition to serving as a Birch Creek jazz trombone faculty member for 22 years, Morrison serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at the Music Institute of Chicago and teaches at Columbia College, North Park University and with the Ravinia Jazz Mentors.

• Birch Creek has a little piece of Vegas in Big Band jazz drum faculty member Bob Chmel, who maintains an active performance schedule with several of Las Vegas’ most popular bands and acts including Frank Sinatra Jr., the Jimmy Dorsey Band and the Glenn Miller Orchestra in addition to touring with Jerry Lewis.

• Besides their obvious love for the trumpet, Lennie Foy (left) and Joey Tartell (right) have many things in common. Both Foy and Tartell have tremendous performance credentials individually. Joe Williams, Quincy Jones, and Roland Hanna are a few of the professionals with whom Foy has performed. Tartell has played with Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, and Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Band. Additionally, both tour as members of the internationally acclaimed Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.

Mike Lee, Birch Creek’s tenor saxophone faculty member, has been involved in many facets of the music business throughout his career. During the day, he serves as Coordinator of Music Programming for Jazz House Kids, a program in Montclair, New Jersey that seeks to improve young people’s lives. In the evening, Lee performs with the acclaimed jazz quartet, New Tricks, and directs Cecil’s Big Band at Cecil’s Jazz Club. He tours extensively under his own name and has several CDs to his credit.
