Birch Creek Seeks Budding Musicians

Birch Creek Jazz II students perform.

Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor has provided intensive instruction to promising young musicians, typically age 14 – 18, since 1976. At Birch Creek, students are immersed in a performance-based, professional, mentoring environment. Two-week summer sessions in Symphony, Percussion & Steel Band, and two sessions of Jazz are offered each summer. Positions remain available in all four sessions for the 2012 season and Birch Creek still has scholarships available for Door County students.

Birch Creek differs from other summer music institutions since it gives students considering a career in music the opportunity to “live the life” of a professional musician for a couple weeks. During that time, faculty members evaluate each student for placement into large and small groups best suited to challenge their ability.

With a student to faculty ratio of two to one, each student takes classes, receives one-on-one instruction, prepares for a demanding schedule of concert programs, rehearses, and performs many times both on campus and in community outreach events, oftentimes right alongside their teachers.

What also differentiates Birch Creek from other summer music programs is the care and support of its faculty. Faculty members are exceptional performing musicians who happen to be superb teachers. The schedule is demanding for students as well as faculty – but the evaluations completed at the end of each session prove the effectiveness of the program.
