Birch Creek Wraps Up 2012 Season with Jazz and Swing

Birch Creek Music Performance Center will finish up a successful 2012 season by featuring world-class, award-winning artists in the live Big Band Jazz concerts. The Academy Jazz Orchestra will perform the “Great Songs of the Jazz Age” on Aug. 17 and “A Century of Swing” on Aug. 18.

Orchestra trumpeters Marquis Hill and Anthony Stanco recently received prestigious awards from the 37th Annual Conference of the International Trumpet Guild. Hill placed first and Stanco placed second in the Jazz Improvisation Competition held on the campus of Columbus State University in Georgia in May.

Hill, of Chicago, returns for his 3rd season as a teaching assistant at Birch Creek. He studies at DePaul University and currently teaches trumpet at Riverside High School in Illinois.

Stanco, of Lansing, Mich., joins Birch Creek this year as a teaching assistant for the Jazz II session. Stanco’s trumpet style demonstrates his understanding of the jazz tradition as well as his passion for performing jazz, salsa, gospel, and R&B music.

Before the Academy Jazz Orchestra takes the stage, student combos and big bands perform at 7:15 pm in the gazebo.

Tickets are $29 for adults; youth and group ticket prices are reduced.

Concerts are held at Dutton Concert Barn located on campus, three miles east of Egg Harbor on County Highway E. For more information call 920.868.3763 or visit http://www.birchcreek.org.
