Birch Creek’s Steel Band Performs

The sweet sound of steel will be featured in “Island Hopping in the Caribbean” program July 17, 8 pm (pre-concert performance at 7:30 pm). The Birch Creek Steel Bands, directed by Al O’Connor, will showcase Liam Teague on steelpan. Traditional calypsos from the West Indies and arrangements of popular and classical music will be performed at the concert.

Robert Chappell will lead faculty ensembles in compositions from musical cultures of the Caribbean including the “tassa” drumming traditions of Trinidad and Tobago. The Birch Creek students will close the first half with the powerful “Samba Batucada,” which one would typically hear during Carnival in Rio. Teague will be featured in a special performance of “Dougla,” a combination of East Indian and Afro-Caribbean sounds from his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago. Also featured will be traditional marimba music from southern Mexico and Guatemala.

Tickets are $29 for adults, $10 for students, and $6 for children. For more information call 920.868.3763 or visit http://www.birchcreek.org.
