BITS & BITES: Al Fresco Dining in the Door

Memorial Day weekend is one of the earliest times of the year when it’s warm enough (most of the time) in northeastern Wisconsin to enjoy a meal outdoors. Here we’ve listed a few places to help you make the most of the beginning of the outdoor dining season, whether you’re looking for patio dining or a swoon-worthy picnic basket.

Mezzanine

7821 Horseshoe Bay Road in Egg Harbor

Mezzanine, formerly the Harbor View Grill, opened its doors May 21. The newly renovated dining space showcases beautiful rooftop views to go with your breakfast, lunch or dinner. From the maple-cherry crêpes with Nueske’s bacon and the smoked whitefish bagel to the house-smoked pastrami Reuben and Wisconsin three-cheese mac, the menu is decidedly Door County with an elevated twist.

Top Deck at Gordon Lodge

1420 Pine Dr. in Baileys Harbor

Now open for the season, Top Deck at Gordon Lodge blends a casual dining atmosphere with views that are dressed to impress. Take in a spectacular sunset while enjoying craft cocktails and appetizers, or celebrate a special occasion atop what was once a charming boathouse. The bar opens at 3 pm; dinner service begins at 4 pm. Closed Tuesdays.

Door County Cherry Hut

8813 Hwy 42 in Fish Creek

Food and fun go hand in hand at Door County Cherry Hut, where you can grab a specialty hot dog or taco – or opt for the special from one of the pop-up vendors throughout the season – before heading out to the patio to take in the live tunes. When Door County evenings get a bit chilly, the fire pit offers the perfect place to cozy up with an adult beverage from the taproom. Open daily, 10 am – 6 pm.

Wickman House
11976 Mink River Rd. in Ellison Bay

Reserve a table to dine under the maple trees at Wickman House’s outdoor seating area. Although reservations cannot be transferred indoors when the restaurant is fully booked in the event of inclement weather, the magical ambience that accompanies a meal enjoyed in the outdoor dining space is worth the risk. Serving Thursday-Sunday, 5-9 pm. Make reservations at wickmanhouse.com.

The Ginger House

9114 Hwy 42 in Fish Creek

Opening just in time for the start of the outdoor dining season, The Ginger House features an assortment of themed, grab-and-go picnic baskets and accessories. Whether you’re exploring the Door with your love, reuniting with your best gal pals, or seeking an unusual way to welcome guests, this picnic and wine boutique can set you up with a basket that’s far from ordinary.
