Bits & Bites: Food Trucks & Floaties Beach Party

Visit Wally’s Weenie Wagon, the Lumberjack Taco Shack, The Dough Shoppe and other local food trucks when they gather in Baileys Harbor on Saturday, Aug. 13, for the Food Trucks & Floaties Beach Party.

From 11 am until 4 pm, grab some tasty choices, and head down to the sandy beach at Anclam Park to cool off in Lake Michigan. Take your own floatie, or buy one from the concession stand. Lakeshore Adventures will have some kayaks to try out, too.

Calling All Barbecue Lovers

If you love barbecue – or better yet, if you love to barbecue – you won’t want to miss the opportunity to be a part of Death’s Door Barbecue, returning to Washington Island for two days of delicious competition.

On Saturday, Aug. 27, a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) One-Meat Rib Contest will give individuals or teams the chance to show off their skills by competing against some of the KCBS regulars. KCBS rules will apply, and certified judges will judge entries on appearance, taste and tenderness. The winner will receive $500, a trophy and bragging rights.

On Sunday, Aug. 28, there will be a double Steak Cookoff Association (SCA) steak contest, as well as a dessert competition and a Death’s Door Gin cocktail contest. The winners in each of four contests – Steak A, Steak B, Dessert and Death’s Door Gin Cocktail – will receive an invitation to the SCA World Championship this fall in Texas.

Interested cooks may compete in one or all of the categories as they challenge some of the top pro teams. The complete rules for the KCBS and SCA contests are available on their respective websites, and registration forms for all contests are available at deathsdoorbbq.com.

Mill Supper Club Welcomes New Chef

Chef Bernard Beronio has joined the Mill Supper Club, 4128 Hwy 42 in Sturgeon Bay, as head chef and is carrying on the establishment’s longtime tradition of supper club fare and German entrées while incorporating his own cultural fusion cooking style.

Originally from Palm Springs, California, Beronio and his wife, Catherine, now call Algoma home. Stop in to enjoy your Mill Supper Club favorites or experience new options inspired by Chef Bernard Beronio’s Southern California roots.

Kettle Black Opens in Fish Creek

No visit to Door County is complete without a fish boil. Early Scandinavian settlers introduced the tradition to the area, and it’s become as synonymous with Door County as cherry pie.

Now fish-boil enthusiasts have a new dining option with the debut of Kettle Black, 4158 Main St. in Fish Creek (formerly Paul David Fine Jewelry). Featuring a view of Fish Creek harbor, the restaurant boils fresh whitefish with a Cajun twist – alongside potatoes, onions, shrimp, sausage and corn.

Are you dining with fish-boil fans, but you’re not a fan yourself? The menu also boasts a chicken dinner and barbecued ribs. There’s a children’s menu that stars a child-size portion of the fish boil, and, of course, cherry pie for dessert.

Hours vary, and reservations are accepted. Call 920.868.5215 to get more details about both.
