Bjorklunden of Door County Offers Seminars

From September 18 to 23, Lawrence University’s Bjِrklunden is offering two seminars: “Rails Across America: The Romance of the American Passenger Train in History, Literature & Film” with Jack Rhodes and “Watercolor: A Fresh Start” with Helen R. Klebesadel. These seminars will take place at Bjِrklunden’s lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor.

“Rails Across America” will present an overview of the role of the passenger train in the American scene. Attendees will look at the rise and fall of the great railroad empires and the development of rail travel destinations. Furthermore, participants will sample the rich literary and movie traditions.

Rhodes received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Austin and later became interested in Communication and Film Studies. He is the author of three books and several scholarly articles.

“Watercolor” is designed for absolute beginners as well as those who have had some experience painting with watercolor but need a refresher to start again. Seminar participants will explore basic traditional approaches to watercolor painting as well as fresh and experimental watercolor techniques.

Klebesadel was a member of the Lawrence University faculty from 1990 – 2000, teaching studio art and gender studies. Maintaining an art studio in Madison, Klebesadel has served on the Wisconsin Arts Board since her appointment by Governor Doyle in 2005. Learn more at http://www.klebesadel.com.
