Bjorklunden of Door County Offers Seminars

From August 14 to August 19, Lawrence University’s Björklunden is offering two seminars: “The United States in the Modern Era, 1968-1980” with Tim Crain and “Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin: Poem, Novel, Opera” with Peter Thomas. These seminars will take place at Björklunden’s lodge, south of Baileys Harbor.
“The United States in the Modern Era, 1968-1980” will examine the triumphs and challenges facing the United States in the modern era. Crain received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Marquette University and a Ph.D. in modern European and modern Jewish history from Arizona State University. His area of specialization is conflict studies, particularly Northern Ireland and the Middle East.
Participants of “Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin” will spend the week exploring Eugene Onegin: A Novel in Verse, the masterpiece of Russian writer Alexander Pushkin. The seminar will study the exploits and intrigues of the central characters and Russian in the 1820. Participants will also learn to play whist, to dance the mazurka, and to fight duels.
Thomas, assistant professor of Russian at Lawrence University, received a Ph.D. in Slavic languages and literature from Northwestern University.
Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Björklunden’s resident chef.
