Bjِrklunden Offers “A Song in my Heart” Seminar

From July 21 – 27, Lawrence University’s Björklunden will offer the seminar, “‘A Song in my Heart’ with Dale Duesing.”

Lorenzo Hart wrote, “I always knew / I would live life through / with a song in my heart” in 1929, but he might as well have been referring to Duesing, the Grammy-award winning lyric baritone and 1967 graduate of Lawrence University. Performers who Duesing considers to be the best examples of their kind will be discussed, focusing on singers, conductors, and pianists in a different genre each day. Music scholarship, critical reviews, and personal anecdotes enliven each study. Complementing the audio and video recorded performances through the week will be a farewell vocal performance by Duesing accompanying himself on the piano.

Duesing received the Grammy in 1993 for his recording of Samuel Barber’s “The Lovers” with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, was designated Singer of the Year by Opernwelt magazine in 1994, and has been described by Le Monde de la Musique magazine as a singer who transformed opera, turning it “upside down” with his performances of Alban Berg’s Wozzek.

Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings at Björklunden’s lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Björklunden’s resident chef.
