Bjِrklunden Offers September Seminars

From Sept. 15 – 20, Björklunden is offering the seminars: “The Swerve: How the World Became Modern” with Daniel Taylor, “Mastering Poetic Forms” with Marilyn Taylor, and “Homeward Bound: Portraits of Americans on the Road & in Search of Themselves in Film, Literature, & Popular Culture” with Jack Rhodes.

The Swerve: How the World Became Modern
is the title of Stephen Greenblatt’s latest foray into the history of western civilization. The Swerve addresses, inter alia, Epicurean philosophy (no room for gods, only atoms and void), mediaeval manuscripts, book history, and the Renaissance. Class discussions will surely be as wide-ranging as Greenblatt’s exemplary prose.

“Mastering Poetic Forms” will have participants experiment with a variety of traditional poetic forms, from the sonnet to the sestina – equipping them with many new stylistic strategies for their poetic bag-of-tricks.

“Homeward Bound” will consider a familiar motif in American film and literature – the homeward journey of characters estranged from their roots and their families.

Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings at Björklunden’s lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Björklunden’s resident chef.
